Risers, Caissons and Conductors

The non-intrusive splash zone condition assessment of rigid risers, caissons, and conductors and subsea structures including through the neoprene coating and monel cladding is performed with the fleet of MEC™-MPS marinised scanners that have satisfied the rigorous demands of the oil & gas industry with a proven track record.

Capabilities

Capabilities utilising the MEC™ technique include:
  • High defect detection sensitivity in assets with wall thickness up to 25.4mm (1”) – higher WT on request, neoprene coating up to 15mm and Monel clad up to 4mm.
  • Ability to detect internal and external corrosion and defects including isolated pits of very small diameter and volume.
  • Ability to inspect at various subsea depths.
  • High inspection speed with a typical coverage of 20m/min.
  • Minimal surface preparation prior to inspection, except for the removal of heavy marine growth.

Benefits

Benefits of MEC™ to support the NII strategy includes:
  • High sensitivity and reliability in detecting internal and external defects including small and shallow pitting caused by bacterial corrosion (from Ø >3mm and 10% wall loss).
  • Ability to inspect through higher wall thickness and various coating types (Neoprene / Monel / TSA).
  • Analysis of defect severity in terms of volume and wall loss.
  • Separation of noise signals from defect signals.
  • Direct sizing of defects during scanning without the need for Ultrasonic verification with accuracy of +/- 10% for onsite reporting and +/- 5% for special offline analysis.
  • Cleaning of the asset down to its bare metal to produce good quality data is not necessary which is a major advantage over Ultrasonic capabilities.
  • Enables fast scanning and C-scan mapping.

Equipment

The signal data is transferred in real time via the umbilical to the inspection computer located on the installation or support vessel to provide instantaneous inspection results. The advanced reporting software utilises a combination of comprehensive C-Scan mapping, individual defect sizing analysis and matrix data to provide a reliable and extensive condition assessment.

The fleet of MEC-MPS marinised scanners are designed and built to support the splash zone inspection of offshore assets.

Advantages of MEC™-MPS marinised scanners includes:
  • Cost effective inspection solution.
  • Comprehensive inspection data within a single deployment through the incorporation of supporting inspection techniques: High resolution ultrasonic mapping, PECT, Laser triangulation system and Camera system.
  • Simultaneous marine growth removal and inspection operation through the incorporation of an advanced cleaning system.
  • Deployable by rope access personnel or divers.
  • Smooth transition from topside directly into the splash zone and subsea area without a break in the continuity of the remotely controlled scanning.
  • Contribute added value to inspection procedures requiring non-intrusive corrosion detection.
